Personal Directions: Know Your Best and Worst!

Classical Feng Shui advocates eight personal directions; of which, four are favorable while other four are unfavorable. Each Gua has four auspicious and four inauspicious personal directions. Each personal direction is governed by a star. Ancient Chinese Texts refer to these directions as “Eight Wandering Stars.” It is extremely important to know your personal directions very well. This will help you in designing your Feng Shui Bedroom and Feng Shui Office. Hence, before proceeding further, I recommend you to calculate your Gua number accurately.┬áThere is a special formula that determines your Gua number. Now that you know your Gua number, note it down and let’s get started!

The Four Auspicious Directions:
  • Sheng Qi:

Star Name: Tang Lang

The energy from this direction attracts prosperity, vitality, respectability, and reputation. It helps in business endeavors and business growth. This is the best personal direction. For advancement in your career, or to improve your productivity; locate your work desk or study table to face this direction. Strive to face your Sheng Qi direction while doing anything important.

  • Tian Yi:

Star Name: Ju Men

Tian Yi is literally translated as “The Heavenly Doctor.” This energy fosters good health. This is a good direction for the bed to point, especially for people who want to recover from any particular illness. Sleeping while facing this direction helps in improving your health in general.

  • Yan Nian:

Star Name: Wu Qu

Yan Nian helps in building relationships. It enhances the quality of relationships, and promotes longevity. This is a good sector for master bedroom. Also, for people who work in human resources and networking, this is a good direction to face while working. Strive to face your personal Yan Nian direction while working.

  • Fu Wei:

Star Name: Fu Bi

This Qi helps you in grounding your energies, allowing you to relax and gain mental clarity. This is a good direction to face while sleeping and meditating. Also, this is a good site for an altar. If you wish to meditate, improve your thoughts, or calm your mind; than tapping into this direction is extremely important. Meditating in this direction will also improve your concentration.

The Four Inauspicious Directions:
  • Ho Hai:

Star Name: Lu Chu

This energy is considered to be least harmful. However, it has been known to lead to all kinds of intermittent difficulties and frustration. It causes disturbances in your endeavors. For those with personal Guas that are different from their partners’ this direction can be used to compromise on the sleeping direction.

  • Wu Gui:

Star Name: Lian Zhen

This energy generates the kind of events that lead to treachery, gossips, slander, back-stabbing, quarrels, and misunderstandings. Facing this direction while sleeping or working is bound to deteriorate your personal relationships with others.

  • Liu Sha:

Star Name: Wen Gu

This direction represents scandals, missed opportunities, and legal entanglements. It can also bring about physical harms like accidents, robberies, and medical operations. People under this influence may experience fitful sleep, lack of focus, fatigue, and lethargy. They may even become alcoholic.

  • Chueh Ming:

Star Name: Po Jun

Chueh Ming means “Life Threatening” in Chinese. This is the most harmful and dangerous energy in Eight Mansions Feng Shui. This energy can cause poor finance and unproductive career. People under this influence experience difficulties in every endeavor. It can cause depression, mental illness, major accidents, business failures, serious relationship problems, and suicidal feelings. Classical Feng Shui highly discourages tapping in this personal direction.

Wandering Star Auspice

Now that you know your Gua number and the directions that are beneficial and detrimental in nature; its time to learn about your personal auspicious and inauspicious directions. Refer to the chart given below. It shows the four favorable and unfavorable directions for each Gua number. Refer to the column which bears your number at the top. Refer the corresponding rows to know your personal auspicious and inauspicious directions.

At this point, you are well equipped to make small adjustments to face your favorable directions while working or sleeping. Referring to the illustration and the above table, we can conclude that it is most advantageous to face Your Sheng Qi while working, closely followed by Yan Nian. While sleeping, prefer facing your Fu Wei or Tian Yi.

      If your Gua is 1, you should try to face North (N2 – 352.5 to 7.5 degree on compass) for meditation. This is your Fu Wei direction. It brings peace of mind, body and soul, and personal growth for you. While sleeping, you can tap into this direction for a peaceful night sleep.
      This Qi helps you in grounding your energies, allowing you to relax and gain mental clarity. This is a good direction to face while sleeping and meditating. Also, this is a good site for an altar. If you wish to meditate, improve your thoughts, or calm your mind; than tapping into this direction is extremely important. Meditating in this direction will also improve your concentration.
      Alternatively, you can also face NE3 (52.5 – 67.5 degree), SE1 (112.5 – 127.5 degree), SW3 (232.5 – 247.5 degree). These directions are also your Fu Wei.

      To take compass reading, download a compass app on your smartphone, or use a compass if you have one.
      * Stand absolutely straight.
      * The arrow should be aligned with the line on the base plate.
      * Hold the compass perpendicular to your body. The compass should not be tilted.
      * The magnetic needle will rotate to point due North.
      * The degree which coincides with the arrow is the degree in front of you.
